How to Choose Graduation Gown Sizes for a School Order

Choosing graduation gown sizes for one student is fairly simple. Choosing them for an entire class takes a little more planning. A useful order list should record each student’s height and whether they need a standard or roomier fit. That helps your school order the right mix of gowns and makes distribution easier when they arrive.

Start with height to choose the gown length

Our adult gown sizes are numbered by garment length in inches. Each size corresponds to a student height range. For example, size 48 has a garment length of 48 inches and is designed for students 159–165 cm tall. A student who is 173–179 cm tall would look at size 54.

Student height Standard size Roomier fit
138–144 cm 39 39FF
145–151 cm 42 42FF
152–158 cm 45 45FF
159–165 cm 48 48FF
166–172 cm 51 51FF
173–179 cm 54 54FF
180–186 cm 57 57FF
187–194 cm 60 60FF
195–202 cm 63 63FF

The number stays the same when you choose an F size: 48 and 48FF are both intended for the 159–165 cm height range, and both have a 48-inch garment length.

Then check whether a standard or F fit is better

Height tells you where to start, but it does not tell you everything about fit. Students of similar height can have different shoulder widths and builds. Our F sizes offer more room in the shoulders than the corresponding standard sizes, making them an option for students with broader shoulders or a fuller build.

The measurements show why it helps to check both height and fit. For sizes 45 through 63, the standard shoulder measurement is 17 inches, while the matching F sizes have a 19¼-inch shoulder measurement. For sizes 39 and 42, the standard shoulder measurement is 15½ inches; the matching F sizes measure 19¼ inches. The F sizes also have slightly longer sleeves than their standard counterparts. The full size chart is the best reference when a student is unsure which fit to choose.

Make the bulk order easier to check

Before placing an order, collect each student’s height and note whether they need a standard or F size. Count these as separate options—51 and 51F, for example—rather than combining them into one total. It also helps to confirm the final list with your school team and consider whether a few spare sizes would be useful for last-minute changes.
